Purpose of the course:

This course delivers 21 hours Accredited Continuing Professional Development (CPD) classroom and practical instruction with assessment over 3 days. It follows the principles of the NEW industry training standard set by the Mast & Tower Safety Group (MATS) (is however NOT Arqiva approved), the Advisory Committee for Work at Height Training (ACWAHT) syllabus and follows the guidelines for MoD Chapter 7 Safety Rule Book where applicable. Basic climbers will be expected to work almost entirely from within the confines of protected areas but are able to move to exposed areas if necessary to carry out straightforward work tasks. The course provides a range of skills for climbing, including the use of all safety equipment and tower rescue. It includes the elements of a Safe System of Work, equipment selection and pre-use inspection, use of tools, risk assessment, method statements and emergency procedures. Evacuation and rescue are practiced at height.

What will be covered on the course:

Theory

  • Legal, personal and medical requirements for work at height
  • Risk assessment, method statements, emergency procedures
  • Selection, care and maintenance of equipment
  • Climbing techniques, ladder and structure
  • Climbing techniques in exposed locations
  • Selection of anchorages
  • Restraint, work positioning, fall arrest systems
  • Use of ropes and knots

Practical

  • Safe use of Personal and Fall Protective Equipment
  • Proper execution of simulated work task (using hand tools)
  • Hoisting equipment up ladders
  • Simulated rescue of a casualty from a structure
  • Ensuring safety of self and others

  • Assessment: Multiple choice test paper and practical skills assessment during training
  • Certification: CPD Accredited Certificate of Training (valid for 3 years – rescue element only valid for 12 months and will require revalidation annually)

Additional Information:

  • Delegates must have a good command of the written and spoken English
  • Delegates must be medically & physically fit to work at height, carry out manual handling and have an aptitude for working at height (a self-certification questionnaire is to be completed on the course)
  • Delegates require basic PPE (gloves, sturdy footwear) and clothing suitable for the environment (FPE equipment will be provided)
