Purpose of the course:

This course delivers 28 hours Accredited *CPD classroom and practical instruction and is designed to introduce delegates who have been selected for appointment as an Authorised Person (Petroleum) to the requirements of working on Petroleum Installations ensuring that a Safe Systems of Work is implemented, managed and controlled by competent persons. This course meets the main requirements of MoD JSP 375, Chapter 5 and other similar safe systems.

On completion of the course delegates will have the requisite knowledge to be able to identify typical petroleum installations, products and hazards. They will be able to assess the risks involved with petroleum installations, check the competency of operatives, the quality of their equipment and ensure that the correct controls and safety documentation are in place prior to issuing a permit for any work to be carried out.

What will be covered on the course:

  • Overview of Health & Safety and statutory regulations
  • Introduction to petroleum products, characteristics, classification and typical installations
  • Introduction and scope of Chapter 5
  • Roles and duties of Appointed Personnel
  • Hazards and risks associated with petroleum installations
  • Product spillage
  • Medical requirements, signs, notices and posters
  • Electrical work in petroleum areas
  • Isolation methodology
  • Gas detection and monitoring
  • Overview of safety equipment PPE & RPE
  • Management arrangements
  • Redundant storage tanks
  • Safety documentation worked examples and scenarios
  • Assessing and appointing APs
  • Auditing and monitoring
  • Written assessments

  • Course duration: Four days
  • Delivery: Classroom based theory training and group exercises
  • Assessment: Multiple choice test paper and scenario based assessment
  • Certification: CPD Accredited Certificate of Training (valid for 3 years)

Additional Information:

  • Delegates must have a good command of written and spoken English
